The Kohala Coast
Looking north and west.
Lava floes and tropical growth. |
This is a very dry area.
It hardly ever rains here. |
The jagged lava rock called a`a
and the ancient volcano called Kohala
in the background. |
A wider view from the same point.
Kohala is a good example of a shield volcano
with very gentle slope. |
This was a little spot we liked for snorkeling.
Hapuna, one of Hawai`i's most famous white sand beaches.
This is an old Hawai`ian temple, called a heiau.
This heiau, up the hill from the smaller one, was built by King
Kamehameha.

The Kohala area is also known for cattle, like this
curious creature. |

On a clear day, you can see Maui off to the west. |

Petroglyphs

Turning inland from the scene immediately above
is a trail through... |

...dense tangled trees to... |

...a large collection of rock carvings... |

...made by ancient Hawai`ians. |
