Southpoint
Green Sand Beach

The southernmost point of the United States.

Not many tourists visit the far southern tip of the Big Island, where the land is a little reminsicent of Eastern Washington (except the ocean over there).

It was a long dusty hike to make it to the famous...

Green Sand Beach.

A deposit of olivine gives the sand its color.

Some green sand mixed in with more normal sand.

It is very windy here. All the time. From the same direction.

Because of the constant wind, windmills seem like an obvious source of power.

The windmills make an eerie sound, and interesting shadows on the fields.

This statue symbolizes the plight of native Hawai`ians since outsiders invaded their homeland.

Tropical sunsets can be quite spectacular from near Southpoint.
