Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park

This is the main caldera of Kilauea.

When Mark Twain visited here, this was a sea of red lava.

Inside Kilauea is a caldera-within-a-caldera, called Halema`uma`u.

Note the sulferous steam venting everywhere. This was a smelly place...

...but we braved...

...the hazardous fumes.

This is a smaller caldera called Kilauea-Iki, which last erupted in 1959.

We hiked across the surface of Iki.

It's amazing how plant life seeks the smallest opportunity to grow.

This is a larger specimen of the same kind of plant as the previous picture.

Stranger in a strange land...

We're having a good time...really.
(You might not want to look at the larger version of this one!)
