Maui north coast

Driving east from the center of Maui towards the town of Hana,
you follow this coastline.

Northeast Maui

And if you look upcountry, you see something like this.

Muddy trail

And if you stop and follow a muddy trail like this...

A Maui waterfall

...you might see something like this.
Worth the walk.

A Maui waterfall

The Road to Hana is noted for its waterfalls.

Another Maui waterfall

We saw so many of them we stopped taking pictures.

Danette & Jon on Maui

A nice lady took our picture with these prehistoric-looking plants.
(Actually, she took the picture with the camera.)

A raodside shrine on Maui

There was a cute old couple tending this roadside shrine.
They ducked out of the picture.

Red sand beach near Hana

A little past the town of Hana is a red sand beach
not frequented by tourists.

Red sand beach near Hana

The surf is very rough here,
and has carved this rock.

`Ohe`o Gulch on Maui

At the `Ohe`o Gulch (AKA the Seven Sacred Pools).
Notice the great respect shown to the site by tourists.

`Ohe`o Gulch on Maui

Looking towards the ocean at `Ohe`o.

Maui road past `Ohe`o Gulch

The road beyond `Ohe`o was too much for this guy...

...but we pressed on.
Note the lack of guardrails at the edge of the cliff.

As you round to the southern coast,
things start to change.

Maui south coast

The southern coast of Maui is sheltered from the rain by Haleakala.

Maui south coast

It is much drier here,
a far cry from the lush growth on the north side.

Roadside bull on Maui

This guy seemed unconcerned with the traffic.
